Youth Score their Own Park
Port Pirie youth had a major win this week with the announcement that more than $94,000 has been approved in principle to develop a purpose built recreational facility.
The ‘Youth Park’ has been backed by the Flinders Region Area Consultative Committee through the Regional Partnerships programme funding and was a critical link in ensuring the project went ahead.
“Young people are the future of our regional cities and we want to ensure they enjoy their recreational time as well as sharing in the success of seeing this project come to life!” said Ms. Barbara Derham, Flinders Region ACC Chairman.
The new youth facility will consist of a 1,100 square metre construction incorporating skate boarding facilities and aesthetic components such as landscaping and lighting.
The Park will be a feature amongst other recreational facilities in the area and will connect to the foreshore development, becoming a drawcard for scheduled events such as extreme sports exhibitions as seen in other regional centres. “The youth of Port Pirie have had a vision of owning their own piece of the community to share and now they can be proud of their efforts! The Port Pirie Youth Sector Network submitted a very strong funding application which was helped by their own financial contribution to the project” said Ms. Derham.

Future Planning for Communities
Drought, the environment and sustainable communities are just some of the issues to be discussed during the Flinders Region Area Consultative Committee’s visit this weekend in Roxby Downs.
The impact on the local community of Roxby Downs will also gain much attention, in anticipation of the proposed mining expansion at the BHP Billiton Mine site at Olympic Dam.
The Flinders Region ACC will meet with many representatives of the Roxby Downs Community and surrounding districts to discuss its current and future needs.
“The Board will engage the community through one on one consultation about what the town and surrounding areas may need due to drought conditions and once mining begins over the next few years”, said Flinders Region ACC Chairman, Mrs. Barbara Derham.
Some of the issues locals face in the wake of a prospective mining expansion includes identification of the town’s infrastructure needs for residents and businesses to enable long-term sustainability.
The cost of living and high rental markets along with increased pressure on services are amongst other issues to be raised at the Community Dinner.
“This is a time to identify what the needs are and put in appropriate strategies at the grass roots level within the community,” Mrs. Derham said.
The Board consists of City Mayors, Business Managers and Chief Executive Officers, including Board Member Bill Boehm of the Roxby Downs Council, who has ensured Communities in the region receive fair consideration from the Flinders Region ACC.
It has been 4 years since the Flinders Region ACC Board has made the journey to consult with the Roxby Downs and surrounding districts communities.
